# How Much Does a Lasting Power of Attorney Cost?

**Short answer:** Every LPA costs £92 to register with the government. On top of that: £0 doing it yourself, around £129 online, or £400 to £1,000+ through a solicitor.

## The three costs to understand

There are really three numbers, and mixing them up is what makes LPA pricing confusing.

First, the registration fee. The Office of the Public Guardian charges £92 to register each LPA, whoever prepares it. A couple making both types each pays £368 in registration fees alone. This money goes to the government, not to whoever helped you with the forms.

Second, the cost of preparing the forms. This ranges from nothing to over a thousand pounds, depending on the route you take.

Third, the cost of getting it wrong. If the OPG rejects your application over a signing mistake, a repeat application within three months costs another £46 per LPA, plus weeks of delay. It is the hidden cost nobody budgets for.

## Doing it yourself: free

GOV.UK has an online tool that fills in the forms at no charge, and it is decent. If you are comfortable working out the certificate provider rules, printing forty-odd pages, and collecting signatures in the strict legal order, this is a perfectly good option and we would genuinely encourage it.

The catch is the back half. The form is the easy part. Most rejected applications fail on signing order and dates, not on the answers. Our guide on [why LPAs get rejected](https://purewill.co.uk/guides/why-lpa-applications-get-rejected) explains the traps.

## Online services: £80 to £160 per LPA

Online services prepare the forms from a questionnaire and add guidance the government tool does not give you. Prices vary a lot. Some charge close to £90 for a single LPA; we charge £79 for one, £129 for both types, and £199 for a couple's full set of four.

What you are paying for is not the form filling. It is the checking, the plain-English explanations at the two points everyone finds confusing (the certificate provider, and the life-sustaining treatment choice), and a signing plan that stops the application bouncing.

## Solicitors: £400 to £1,000+

A solicitor typically charges £400 to £700 for a single LPA and more for pairs, on top of the registration fees. For most people with straightforward affairs that is more than the job needs. Where a solicitor earns their fee is complexity: business interests, family conflict, doubts about capacity, or an estate where the LPA interacts with trusts. If any of that sounds like you, pay for advice.

## Reduced fees

If the donor's gross annual income is £12,000 or less, the registration fee halves to £46 per LPA. Some means-tested benefits remove it entirely. You claim with form LPA120, sent with the application and proof of income.

## With PureWill

[Both LPAs for £129](https://purewill.co.uk/power-of-attorney), prepared from one set of questions, with an optional printed and posted pack if you do not have a printer. The £92-per-LPA government fee is separate, and we say so everywhere, because finding it out at the end is horrible. Wills work the same way: see [how much a will costs](https://purewill.co.uk/guides/how-much-does-a-will-cost-uk).
